Practice makes perfect

April 19, 2010 by kathi

That should probably be more like “practice makes perfect, but not if you practice your mistakes, only if you practice doing things correctly.” But that’s too long to say all the time. And anyway, right now I want to figure out the best way of using our limited back yard practice space efficiently, and so that we are not practicing any mistakes.

Here is what we have to work with:

Two weeks till our next trial

April 18, 2010 by kathi

The second half of April kind of sneaked up on me. Freya and I were not entered in any rally obedience trials this month, but we did not get in as much good training time as I had hoped to. We didn’t totally waste the first half of the month, but we still have a lot to work on.

Yesterday’s rally class had its ups and downs. I’m still not able to get a full 6 feet to the right of the jump if I want to be sure that Freya will go over it, and not around it. The strategy remained the same as last week: lower jump height and handler closer to the jump on the run-by. I have ruled out injury or discomfort as Freya’s reason for sometimes refusing the jump. It’s more likely that she is being lazy or smart or both, and is taking the path of least resistance. Unfortunately, not acceptable for this particular sport!

Back in the wind

April 17, 2010 by kathi

Not me… yet. One of my dormant Sportsters.

I haven’t been much for taking pictures of any of my wheels, not even the ones I really liked. I never did find any photos of my 1990 Harley-Davidson Sportster XLH883H (the ones you might remember seeing here in a past post are of my 1989 Sportster). It seems odd that I didn’t take a picture when I first got it. Maybe because it was and is almost bone stock. And I didn’t take one today as it left with one of Dan’s club members.

I’m a little bit sad, but I hope Carlos has fun with it and takes good care of it. It’s time that bike got back in the wind.

Bad start to someone’s day

April 16, 2010 by kathi

My own day was fine, thanks for asking. It didn’t start out too well for a few other people, though. The corner just east of my house has more than its share of accidents. I’m really not sure why as it doesn’t seem to have any special obstructions or blind spots. You’d think that when the traffic light went in two blocks west that things would have improved, but there have been more accidents since then, or at least it seems that way.

This one resulted in injury to one of the drivers (the one that appeared to be at fault), one car up on a neighbor’s lawn (unfortunately not one of the jagoff neighbors that would deserve tire tracks on their lawn), and a number of gangbanger-looking family members of the involved drivers milling about the block. Police, fire, EMS, and tow truck all arrived quickly and this was a pretty typical accident for our corner.

The day got less exciting from there, and that was just fine with me.

What’s my (network) name

April 15, 2010 by kathi

I haven’t looked at the list of wireless network SSIDs in my neighborhood in a while, since my laptops are set up to automatically connect to either my home or work network, whichever one is available. Since I got a new laptop last week, I had another look at the wireless network names in the area while setting up.

At the risk of revealing lameness, our home network name uses the kennel name we use for our Rottweilers. Obviously, our network is properly secured, and I don’t really care if people guess whose network it is. And even if it weren’t secured, how dumb do you have to be to choose people with Rottweilers to steal from?
