Thought it was easier to do it right the first time?

March 30, 2010 by kathi

Maybe not. I spent some time today trying to get a number of things changed or corrected, and it must not have been easier to do it right the first time.

Most important one, at least in my warped priority system: Freya’s URO2. I know I have bored or irritated some of you who are not psycho dog people yourselves with my insistence on keeping close tabs on the dogs’ title progress from the day we first start competing for a particular title, until the day the paper certificate is in my hands. So I feel vindicated that I finally have a discrepancy to report. I’m not saying I am pleased, because I am quite far from pleased. But at least now I can point and say, “see, it happens.”

Only two of Freya’s three Level 2 legs were recorded as qualifying and the other was recorded as non-qualifying. I spoke to a very nice and helpful person (Beth) in UKC’s Dog Sports Department, and I am almost 100% sure that a review of the original trial paperwork will get the records corrected. There were only four dogs in our RO2A class so it can’t be that hard to straighten out. At least, I hope that’s the case. We have the qualifying ribbon and even a placement ribbon. Unfortunately, there may or may not be awards photos, and I did not get copies of our score sheets at this trial. You can bet from here on out I will do that without fail, regardless of who I have to inconvenience. Sorry, show secretaries. I don’t want to be a bitch; that’s Freya’s job. But I want to have all the proof I can gather in my own hands in case of anything like this happening again.

ADDED 3/31/10: I just received an email from Beth letting me know that she has heard back from the judge, who is out of town but will check his records upon his return home on Friday. Very pleased to hear that they are very much on top of things!

ADDED 4/7/10: All is well! Thanks, Beth!

Two other annoyances involve credit cards and banking, so are obviously much lower on the priority grid than Freya. I mean, Freya is FREYA!!! and money is only money, right? The credit card one was easy but aggravating. The APR was arbitrarily raised a few months ago for no reason that I could see. This is a credit card that I have had for about 20 (yes, 20) years. There have been a few late payments over the years, none within the last year, and it has never been over limit. I advised them of these facts and they agreed that the APR was inappropriately high, and adjusted it back down. Had I never called, they would have never done a single thing. I almost never carry a balance on that card, and perhaps they raised the rate because of that fact and because I don’t use it often. But really. How screwed up is that?

As for the banking annoyance, I do not think it should take two emails and a phone call to resolve a mistake made on the bank’s end. I won’t say which bank because everything else has been fine so far. New checking accounts of the type I recently opened are supposed to get the initial check order at no charge. When I saw a charge for checks on my statement, I emailed to verify that the free checks were not a limited time offer. The bank’s reply confirmed that, apologized, and said there would be a credit issued that day. It wasn’t. A few days later, I emailed again to inform them of that fact. They apologized again, said the branch had been notified, and that I may want to call them. Ummm, no. I do not want to call anyone. I want it fixed without my having to call anyone. You guessed it. I had to call. I got a long wait on hold, yet another apology, and at least this time, an immediate credit that was visible right away when I checked online. But should I have had to initiate contact this many times for a problem this simple that was their error from the get-go? I think not.

I’m not sure what category my last annoyance fits into. It’s a bit unusual. The company that services our phone system at work doesn’t usually cause much annoyance, so I won’t mention their name. However. Their trouble ticket system has had my name and email listed as primary contact on someone else’s account for some time. So whenever that account has a problem, I get a confirming email from the trouble ticket system. Since those confirmations do not say anything about the email address being unmonitored, and I never got a bounce-back from my emails trying to inform them about the error, I assumed they had received them. Until today, when I got yet another confirmation. This was extremely annoying because their website lists NO way to contact them via regular email. I had to phone them. The person I spoke to did not sound stupid at all, but it took forever to get across to them that not only was I not the right contact for that company, I had no idea who they even were, and that it was pointless to ask me who the contact should be, because I didn’t even know who worked there. I think they finally got it. I am wondering who will get the confirmation email the next time our company has a problem, though!

More pretty pictures!

March 29, 2010 by kathi

I’ve updated our gallery with photos from Freya’s March 13-14 UKC trials.

Thanks to Karen Hollis of Sirius Pet Images for these Freya photos, yes, even this one with Freya’s face planted firmly in the food bowl where it is not supposed to be!

I had a bad technology moment with the gallery. I remembered that I had not installed Gallery 2 using Fantastico… but after I had already started updating it through Fantastico. This often does not go well, especially if you have customized your Gallery 2 installation in any way. Unlike some of the other galleries I maintain, this one is pretty generic, so major disaster did not occur. Panic almost did, when the installation would not verify.

It is much easier to calm down and think straight when you know you have a very recent backup. I highly recommend regular backups, or at least backups before you try to “fix” stuff. After almost panicking, I remembered to check the configuration file, and realized I needed to edit the full paths. All was well after that.

Because I apparently like the stress, though, I’m going to inflict another possible bad technology moment upon myself by moving the gallery to another domain soon. I have too many domains that I don’t really need or want any longer. I’m trying to consolidate, so the gallery will soon be moving to vomviersenrotts.com where it really belongs anyway.

EDITED TO ADD: The gallery has moved and the link has been updated.

Give me news, real news, or at least pretty pictures

March 28, 2010 by kathi

Even though Freya didn’t seem to be as sore this morning as she was yesterday, we skipped today’s trial, and Rottweiler wrestling and chase games in the yard were disallowed for another day. That should help her get back to 100%, at least physically, before our next class. We still need a lot of work on attention under heavy distractions.

Since we skipped the trial and cancelled all Rottweiler contact sports for the day, there was plenty of time to go online and find things to complain about. I have complained a few times in the past about the faux “news” from stupid Facebook apps filling up the “news” feed.

So I just want to say one more thing about that. There is one individual that I keep as a Facebook “friend” for only one reason. This person adds just about every new Facebook application, stupid or not, seemingly almost the minute it is released. Now, you would think that would make me not want that person as a friend, and in general, that would be true.

However. In this case, I am using said app addict as my early warning system. The minute this person sends out a “news” item from a new application, I can immediately block the app and never be bothered by it again. Or at least until Facebook breaks itself yet again.

See, everyone has a purpose. Sometimes, their purpose is just not very grand.

Oh, and if you’re wondering if you are that person? If you’re interested enough in my life to read my blog, and interested enough in your own life to post things other than just what the apps post for you … you are almost certainly not that person.

We didn’t take the shot

March 27, 2010 by kathi

Yesterday I was still considering the possibility of taking our best shot at qualifying at Level 3 in this weekend’s UKC rally obedience trial.

We didn’t take the shot at all. Freya was refusing sits this morning during our practice session. At first I thought she was just blowing me off. But she did seem a bit stiff and sore. We may have overdone things while trying to catch up on last minute training, particularly the jumps. I didn’t want her to associate trialing with discomfort, especially not at one of her “safe places.” And I definitely didn’t want her to crash a jump.

Freya seems to be feeling better after a full day of rest. I don’t think she was faking it. Do dogs do that? Right now, I am thinking we will skip tomorrow’s trial as well, but I’ll let her tell me how she feels in the morning.

Might as well jump

March 26, 2010 by kathi

Production for Issue 1 2010 of The Total Rottweiler Magazine wrapped up earlier this week, but this was still not a good dog training week for me with missed classes and limited practice time.

So it’s zero hour and I’m still trying to decide whether it makes more sense to skip this weekend’s UKC rally obedience trials, or give it our best shot, knowing we are probably not going to qualify. I know, I know. There have been other times when I thought our chances for qualifying were poor, and we got through it anyway. This time, however, there are two exercises that we truly have not yet mastered, and that are very likely to be included.

One is Halt – Stand – Heel Backwards 3 Steps – Halt. This was easier to teach than I expected, but results are still not totally reliable unless we’re up against a wall or fence.

This is also the first time for us to trial in a level (UKC Level 3) that has a jump. Dan built us a practice jump, so at least we were still able to work at home. Freya still wants to go around the jump as often as she chooses to go over it. We’re working on it with the usual strategies of repositioning the jump against a wall or in a doorway. Check out our very portable jump, by the way:

Dan built it using instructions found at http://sotcdogtraining.com/pdf/Jumps_Targetwork.pdf. This is actually an agility jump (there is a second crossbar which I am not using), but works fine as a practice bar jump for us. Not sure how old these instructions are, but the cost has gone up from their estimated $15. Our total was around $25 so it still isn’t even close to being a hardship.

Right now, I’m leaning towards giving it our best shot tomorrow. I am trying to think positive, and really, I should be. Although it feels like we are behind on training, and in some ways we are since we’ve missed more than a few classes and practice sessions, we are actually slightly ahead of the game. The original plan for this weekend was to get at least one leg towards our Level 2 title. I did not think there was any way we’d be done with Level 2 by now. And here we are, done with Level 2 two weeks ago, and not quite ready for Level 3. We’re actually two weeks ahead of schedule, not two exercises behind schedule.

Hopefully that thought will help me relax! Freya is already snoring on “her” couch. Maybe I should take some relaxation lessons from her.
