Is it time yet? (17 of 31/17 of 274)

January 17, 2009 by kathi

You might remember that back in November, I lamented the fact that I didn’t plan a day to relax before leaving on vacation. I have exactly one thing planned for the day before we leave this time: drop Freya off at the boarding kennel. So I have high hopes of a relaxing evening, at least.

Unfortunately, the coming week is going to be anything but relaxing at work. We have a few large projects starting on Monday (did no one get the message that Monday is a federal holiday?) and the entire week promises to be somewhat hellish. One of the projects requires contact with one of the biggest jagoffs on the planet and said jagoff’s clueless minions. That alone would make the week unpleasant. Add that to long hours and the rather tedious nature of the projects themselves, and it will make for a very long and horrible work week.

Posting from vacation didn’t work out that well for me in November, but I still managed to post every day, so I think I’ll be fine with completing this month’s NaBloPoMo. I have more interesting topics and photos to post when I’m on vacation, but I just don’t want to spend a lot of vacation time sitting at a computer.

One thing I didn’t have on the last vacation is my BlackBerry, which was purchased shortly after we returned from that trip. I really wish there was such a thing as a WordPress client for BlackBerry, and I was very surprised to see that no such thing exists. Go ahead, iPhone users, gloat a little about your selection of apps.

Even without a WordPress client, I think having the BlackBerry will help with blogging from vacation. But I don’t think I ever finished setting up email posting to this blog, so I’ll have to make sure to do that sometime before this weekend is over.

Back to proofreading! I’m trying to make sure I’m caught up on all the proofreading for Total Rottweiler Magazine, and all the updates for the various websites I maintain, before this weekend is over.

Still frozen (16 of 31/16 of 274)

January 16, 2009 by kathi

I had to work late, and temperatures are still well below zero, so my brain is either fried or frozen. I can’t wait for a change of weather. Don’t expect much tonight.

The entries for Axe’s first shows are now closed. I understand how championship points work, but I’ve never had to worry about them for a dog of my own before. If I correctly read the entry count and the points schedule for the right region, if all the entered dogs show up, he could get 2 points each day if he wins the classes, and 3 if by some stroke of luck he wins Best of Breed, Best of Opposite or Best of Winners. Three points would be a major, which would be more than wonderful if he could get one his first time out. Oh, yes. He could also get nothing. I am trying not to worry about it.

I spent a bit of time today with some new BlackBerry applications which look really good so far.

SocialScope is in alpha testing now and allows you to manage your Twitter feed and your Facebook status updates. The Facebook functionality is very minimal right now, but it truly shines as a Twitter client. Take a look at the review posted on Crackberry.com. SocialScope is really working hard and quickly on improvements. An update done earlier tonight added manual refresh, notifications, retweet and follow/unfollow to the features mentioned in the review. Great customer service/support, too – if you contact them on Twitter you will get very speedy responses to questions and problems.

Bitstream’s Bolt J2ME browser is in beta. I didn’t find it quite as speedy as advertised but it does a great job of rendering PC-style pages on the BlackBerry. Take a look at the review for more information.

I’m going to go and be a good alpha/beta tester now. OK, fine. Yes. That does mean I’m going to go play with my BlackBerry now. Good night, all!

Brain freeze (15 of 31/15 of 274)

January 15, 2009 by kathi

The temperature has been below zero all day, and tomorrow isn’t going to be much warmer. I think my brain may have frozen as I can’t think of anything to write about tonight. I’m wondering what Freya is dreaming about. She’s making these strange little growling and whining noises as she sleeps, and her legs are making “running” motions. I’m guessing she’s dreaming about chasing small critters. I could be wrong, though. I am remembering the “Dog Dancing” episode of “King of the Hill” where Bill is thinking the same thing about his Rottweiler, and the Rottweiler is actually dreaming about chasing and biting Bill.

That’s it. Nothing else in my brain tonight. Frozen solid.

I do laugh every time (14 of 31/14 of 274)

January 14, 2009 by kathi

It’s dangerously cold tonight, I’ve got a bunch of things to catch up on, and on top of that, I had nothing interesting enough to write about happen today (other than American Idol, of course, but others do a much better job at skewering or honoring this season’s contestants than I will).

I really do laugh whenever I see this joke, as it really rings true. I know it’s a repeat for many of you, but enjoy it again with me as I take this break and then get back to catching up.

How many dogs does it take to change a light bulb?

GOLDEN RETRIEVER: The sun is shining. The day is young. We’ve got our whole lives ahead of us, and you’re inside worrying about a stupid burned out bulb?

BORDER COLLIE: Just one. And then I’ll replace any wiring that’s not up to code.

DACHSHUND: You know I can’t reach that stupid lamp!

ROTTWEILER: Make me.

LAB: Oh, me, me!!!! Pleeeeeeze let me change the light bulb! Can I? Can I? Huh? Huh? Huh? Can I?

GERMAN SHEPHERD: I’ll change it as soon as I’ve led these people from the dark, check to make sure I haven’t missed any, and make just one more perimeter patrol to see that no one has tried to take advantage of the situation.

TIBETIAN TERRIER: Let the Border Collie do it. You can feed me while he’s busy.

JACK RUSSELL TERRIER: I’ll just pop it in while I’m bouncing off the walls and furniture.

POODLE: I’ll just blow in the Border Collie’s ear and he’ll do it. By the time he finishes rewiring the house, my nails will be dry.

COCKER SPANIEL: Why change it? I can still pee on the carpet in the dark.

DOBERMAN: While it’s dark, I’m going to sleep on the couch.

BOXER: Who cares? I can still play with my squeaky toys in the dark….

CHIHUAHUA: Yo quiero Taco Bulb.

IRISH WOLFHOUND: Can somebody else do it? I’ve got this hangover….

POINTER: I see it. There it is. There it is, right there….

GREYHOUND: It isn’t moving. Who cares?

AUSTRALIAN SHEPHERD: First, I’ll put all the light bulbs in a little circle…

OLD ENGLISH SHEEP DOG: Light bulb? I’m sorry, but I don’t see a light bulb….

HOUND DOG: ZZZZZZzzzzz.z.z.z..z..z..z…z

CAT: Dogs do not change light bulbs. People change light bulbs. So, the question is: How long will it be ! before I can expect light? Will you people hurry up?!

ALL OF WHICH PROVES, ONCE AGAIN, THAT WHILE DOGS HAVE MASTERS, CATS HAVE STAFF.

Shameless promotion (13 of 31/13 of 274)

January 13, 2009 by kathi

Axel update! His first show will be on January 30. I won’t be there to see my aspiring butterfly in his AKC debut. I’m a little bit sad about that, but it is really for the best as he will show much better if he’s not looking around outside the ring for me. Plus I will be visiting my parents, who I don’t get to see nearly enough, and who are also half an ocean and half a continent away from the show site.

Now on to the shameless promotion promised in the title! I’m helping with a new Rottweiler publication, Total Rottweiler Magazine. I didn’t think I would ever get involved with another periodical. In some crazed and illogical unconscious attempt to prove that I do use what I learned in j-school, I’ve been newsletter/magazine editor for a couple of different clubs, and copy editor for another niche magazine. Some of those experiences were fun. Some sucked the life out of me.

I guess everyone is allowed to change their mind now and then, though. Total Rottweiler Magazine is off to a good start and I’m happy to be involved! If you are reading this and even remotely interested in Rottweilers, please consider subscribing or perhaps buying a single issue to check it out.

Now that Axel is almost officially a show dog, I have to shamelessly promote him, too. Here’s the ad I’ll be running in the magazine (sorry, it’s a repeat if you are reading this on LiveJournal).

If you click on it, the full sized version will show up (at least I think it will). I tried to make it almost a “teaser” since his show debut takes place after the ad deadline. The magazine is a quarterly, so hopefully by the time the next deadline rolls around, I’ll be able to list him as a Champion!
