Obligatory First Dog comments (11 of 30/77 of 274)

April 11, 2009 by kathi

All of us psycho dog people with blogs have an obligatory First Dog post to make at some point, so here is mine. My psycho dog person credentials: 15 years in Rottweilers, show occasionally, trial infrequently, training is lifelong, health testing is done as appropriate for my breed, not currently a member of any clubs but my personal code of ethics would meet or exceed that of the clubs, have not bred a litter.

Shortly after TMZ broke the news about Tuesday’s upcoming arrival of the First Dog, the mainstream media picked up on it and a few different versions of the story have been reported. However, everyone seems to be in agreement that the pup is a male Portuguese water dog, six months old, from a breeder in Texas who is also the breeder of Senator Ted Kennedy’s dogs. Some are reporting that the pup is in fact Senator Kennedy’s youngest PWD Cappy. Other sources are reporting that the pup is one that was returned to the breeder for rehoming, and is from the same or similar bloodlines as Cappy.

As a psycho dog person, I have very mixed feelings about the whole First Dog thing.

I never had a dog or cat as a youngster, and when I hear my husband and friends talk about their childhood pets, I feel I missed something important by not having that experience. Nothing that permanently scarred me, of course, but if the Obama kids don’t have to miss out on it, good for them.

I didn’t live in the limelight as a child, nor do I now. The Obama family does. Celebrity pets (and I would argue that all of the recent presidents are just as much celebrities as politicians or statesmen) are another thing I have mixed feelings about. They will obviously have all of their material needs taken care of, but in many cases, it won’t be a typical family life they get to live.

The Portuguese Water Dog community is wary of the fallout that the sudden attention to their breed will bring. It’s the same fallout that is familiar to anyone in a breed that has been popularized by a movie or television show: overbreeding, people buying or adopting a pup “like the one in the movie” and between six to twelve months later, an influx of that breed to rescues and shelters because people didn’t research the breed and expected it to be “just like the one in the movie.” You know, the one that some professional trained, and that was performing according to a script.

Since the Obamas and the media have referred to the faux breed name “Labradoodle” whenever the First Dog subject came up, I am glad they did not pick one. I have nothing against mixed breed dogs in general. I have everything and then some against purposely bred faux breed mixes with dumbass cutesy names and inflated price tags.

I’m not surprised at the comments at TMZ and other media sites from people who are unhappy that the Obamas are not adopting a shelter dog. I am slightly surprised at the pure hate in some of those comments, and the ones that say that now they cannot support Obama because he is getting a dog from a breeder. Ummm. There are valid reasons for a person to not support Obama, but his dog source would be a real reach for being any kind of reason at all.

Of course it would be a much better feel good story if a homeless dog went from shelter to White House, but I don’t feel the Obamas are being irresponsible to get a dog from a reputable breeder, especially in light of Malia’s allergies. I really don’t know how many purebred dogs of the so-called hypoallergenic breeds turn up in shelters each year. I don’t think it is many compared to the more common breeds and mixes.

The breeder is a member of a Code of Ethics club, and their breeding dogs appear to be Champions and health tested. If the news reports are true and the almost-First Dog was returned to the breeder by the original owner, the breeder is one of the good ones that take responsibility for a dog for its entire life, and the original owner is honoring a contract that undoubtedly requires them to contact the breeder if they cannot keep the dog for any reason.

So that’s what this psycho dog person thinks. What about you?

That one post every NaBloPoMo month (10 of 30/76 of 274)

April 10, 2009 by kathi

Sorry, all. Here is “that post” for April, sort of like “that post” for March: that one post in every NaBloPoMo month where I’m posting just to post because I’ve run out of time, or energy, or ideas.

Here’s a gratuitous Axel photo for your enjoyment:

Click for a larger version of Axel gaining 2 points at a show in Belleville, IL!

And if you would, please lend your support to the workers of AT&T:
http://standupforworkers.com/

They are currently working without a contract in five states and facing pay and benefit cuts despite the company’s profits and the fact that the executives, much like executives in the financial sector, are not taking any of the brunt of any planned reductions.

That’s all for now. See you tomorrow, when I get my energy and my content back!

5 great imaginary bands (9 of 30/75 of 274)

April 9, 2009 by kathi

A great opportunity presents itself today for me to both indulge my love of fictional bands and fulfill the Day 2 31DBBB assignment to write a list post.

So let’s rock!

5 great imaginary bands

I am far from alone in my obsession with imaginary bands. The Rocklopedia Fakebandica lists about a thousand fictional bands and singers from movies and television. Here are five of my personal favorites, in alphabetical order. You didn’t really think you were going to trap me into rating and ranking fake bands, did you?

1. The Barbusters. Light of Day is a (mostly) filmed-in-Chicago movie with a title song written by Bruce Springsteen. Already you see two of my personal obsessions there. Great casting and unexpectedly good performances (acting and music both) from Michael J. Fox and Joan Jett as the brother and sister team fronting the Barbusters. One of the bar scenes was filmed at the Iron Rail on the northwest side of Chicago, which was then owned by a friend of ours.

2. Eddie and the Cruisers. John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown Band provided the sound for the fictional band from Jersey. Their Springsteen-like sound is the best thing about the two movies (particularly the original one). Michael Paré is hot and mysterious as Eddie Wilson. Tom Berenger is a big personal favorite of mine and definitely in his role as Frank Ridgeway.

3. Ellen Aim and the Attackers. Michael ParĂ© is once again hot, though not too mysterious, as Tom Cody in Streets of Fire. Diane Lane as Ellen Aim is even hotter. Fire Inc. does the musical performances, and the songs were written by Jim Steinman. If you don’t like Meat Loaf’s Bat out of Hell album, you might not like “Tonight Is What It Means To Be Young.” Get past it… “let the revels begin, let the fire be started, we’re dancing for the desperate and the broken-hearted…” what is not to love there?

4. The Monkees. This is where my love for imaginary bands started. I’m sure many other baby boomer females can relate to that love. Peter Tork, Mike Nesmith, Micky Dolenz and Davy Jones were pretty much the first made-for-TV-band. I was probably the only girl in my 4th grade class who wasn’t crazy about Davy Jones, though. “Daydream Believer” and “I’m A Believer” still make me smile and yes, are both on my MP3 player.

5. 2ge+her. This was MTV’s send-up of the formulaic boy bands made popular by… hey, how about that, MTV! They were featured in a TV-movie and then a short-lived series. Their actual songs were surprisingly good, in a boy band kind of melodic harmony good, that is. The series was cut short not only by falling ratings, but also the tragic death of 16-year-old cancer survivor Michael Cuccione from respiratory disease. One of the other band members was Kevin Farley, brother of the late Chris Farley, and funny in his own right.

The elevator pitch (8 of 30/74 of 274)

April 8, 2009 by kathi

In conjunction with the April NaBloPoMo theme of growing, one of my personal goals is to grow as a writer and communicator. In a happy coincidence, Darren Rowse at Problogger is also running “31 Days to Build a Better Blog” in April.

I’m finally getting a chance to start on the first task of writing an elevator pitch for this blog. An elevator pitch is a short statement that cleverly and succinctly summarizes the purpose and benefits of your blog (or business, or invention, or yourself for that matter).

First exercise, and I’m stuck already, as this blog did not start out with much of a purpose except as a convenient container for NaBloPoMo posts. It still continues to fill that need quite well, by the way. Not only is my purpose somewhat weak, the blog’s name (Look Twice) and tagline (Is that me, baby, or just a brilliant disguise) have nothing to do with that purpose. They are song lyrics that tie in to the domain name (brilliant-disguise.net) and to my not-terribly-original thought that I, and many of us, are intentionally or unintentionally hiding behind the “brilliant disguise” of our online persona. Some of the other lyrics of the song would be suited to creating a tagline for a blog about relationships, but that’s not something I blog about often, if at all.

If you’ve been following me this month, you might have seen that I’m already considering reviving and reworking an old pet health blog. If I split off all of the pet-related posts to that blog, that blog’s mission would be to share my personal experiences and explorations into pet health and training topics and issues. I’d keep the original name “dog:blog :: cat:chat” and add the tagline “a personal chronicle of pet health and training topics.” The long version for the “about me”: Everyone loves to talk about their pets, and I am no exception. I am here in the hopes that sharing my personal experiences with health issues and training issues faced by my current and past pets can help others ask good questions and make good choices for their pets.

I could also keep going with this blog’s present eclectic (ok, fine then, mixed-up) content, including having the pets stay here, and change the title and tagline. I am fond of my current title and tagline, but when it comes down it, they are not my own words. This blog doesn’t have much of a following yet, so it would not hurt anything much to change the name and even the domain right now.

My most frequent topics here are the dogs and technology. Possible new name “Rottweilers Ate My iBook” and possible new tagline “Rottweilers. Computers. World Domination. Not necessarily in that order.” My favorite “on the Internet, no one knows you are the cutest Rottweiler puppy ever” picture could be worked into a header graphic.

I'm on your computer, downloading all your private data.

The long version for the “about me”: This is my highly personal take on my favorite topics: the care and training of Rottweilers, and the care and taming of technology. Remember: don’t let either of them know that you’re scared!

Heh, at least I’ve gotten started! I’ll come back to this in a day or two and hopefully by then I will have decided whether to have one blog or two. Thanks again to Darren for an extremely thought-provoking start to 31DBBB!

TV break (7 of 30/73 of 274)

April 7, 2009 by kathi

I’ll be playing catch-up with my 31 Days to Build a Better Blog Challenge assignments after I get this post for NaBloPoMo in. Looks like I’ll be just under the wire with it, too.

Tonight’s big draw for me was the season premiere of Rescue Me. The 2008 season was missing in action due to the writer’s strike, so we have an extended 2009 Season 5 to look forward to: 22 episodes. So I am very happy to report that the season is off to a good start.

My favorite part about Rescue Me is the scenes in the kitchen, where they have the best conversations about some really dumb topics. Tonight’s question: would you rather lose one eye… or one ball? The firehouse banter is totally back and in great form. So is the seriously screwed up mess that is the Gavin family. And I have never seen Michael J. Fox play such an assholish character; I think he is going to be a great addition to the show.

Some things about this show still leave me at a loss. Tommy Gavin has really long hair for a firefighter. Also, with his very average looks, how would he have all those hot women chasing after him (I know, it is his show, and I guess if I ran a show, I would write myself as a major sex symbol, too, regardless of how far from reality that would be). My technical advisor assures me that being a firefighter, especially in uniform, does add to one’s sex appeal even if one is average-looking, so I will let that one slide for now. I also think Garrity and Silletti are played way too clueless. If they were that dumb, they would never have even passed the entrance exam, let alone survive as many fires as they’ve been on.

Some of you already know this: my “technical advisor” is my husband who is a firefighter/EMT-B with the Chicago Fire Department and from a firefighting family. The show is a big favorite of his, too. I often ask him if something on the show is something that would happen in real life. Usually the answer is yes. But he swears that to his knowledge, there has never been a… ermmmm…. male member measuring contest… at any of the houses he has been at. Improbable stuff does happen, including accidentally setting the firehouse on fire. It just probably wouldn’t happen all at the same house, to the same guys.

I’m glad Rescue Me is back – I missed it a lot. I have only a few must-watch shows, and this is definitely one of them.
