Applause where it’s deserved

June 17, 2009 by kathi

During the time I was moving my business and personal domains to WiredTree, I mentioned several times how impressed I was with their excellent customer service and technical support. I moved the business domain first, and Monday was the one-month anniversary of the move. Everything has gone quite well this month, with only minor move-related issues that were taken care of almost as soon as I hit “Enter” on the support ticket request.

I was still surprised and pleased to receive a follow-up email from WiredTree customer service manager Joe Doss, checking to make sure that all was in fact going well, reminding me of the different support options, and inviting my general feedback.

I continue to be totally impressed with WiredTree, am very happy to have a great hosting company like this local to me in Chicago, and am feeling very good about my decision to have both my business and personal VPSs there.

I want to say a good word for my former web host, Web.com. I ended up there by way of HostPro being sold to Interland being sold to Web.com. You can see that could have been a recipe for disaster, although honestly I never had the issues with Interland that some of the bad reviews during that time would have predicted. In fact, my overall experience was quite good, with local American 24/7 tech support, available by either ticket or phone, throughout all of the moves. I did not leave because I was dissatisfied with customer service or tech support. Rather, the ownership changes had ultimately resulted in a move away from VPS support, and my aging server was not able to be updated to 21st century standards.

I had a rather frustrating experience while cancelling, though. I cancelled on my billing day and the customer service person who handled the call would not cancel the charge for the coming month. When the automated follow-up email arrived, I expressed my displeasure that the charge was not waived since the cancellation was made on the billing day by a long-time customer who had never missed a payment. Within less than 24 hours, I had a call and an email stating they would reverse the charge. When the credit did not show up online, a customer support supervisor took responsibility for walking the credit through the system and making sure it went through properly. All ended well. I would be happy to continue to recommend them to anyone who needs shared personal or commerce hosting.

So that’s my good customer service story for two companies. Just wish I had more of them!

I wonder if I need a smaller dog

June 16, 2009 by kathi

I was looking at the video I made on Sunday to help set up future videos of obedience practice sessions in the yard. I made a short clip of Axel so he wouldn’t be jealous that Freya’s clip was featured in Sunday’s post. Okay, not really. It was so I could figure out how to set up a video album in Gallery 2. The file size of Freya’s video was a little too large, so I had to make a smaller one.

Anyway, as I watched the clip, it struck me.

Do I need a smaller dog? Is my dog that big, or am I really that short? Or does the camera just make him look bigger, and me look fatter?

Once again, try to overlook the sloppy leash handling. We were really just working on the camcorder settings for the “real” videos that will be coming soon. If it ever stops raining, that is. Yes, sad to say that the rain has come back after two short days of sunshine. It’s supposed to be around on and off all week. We’re going to rust instead of tan this summer.

Oh. I don’t really want a smaller dog. With only a very short break, there has always been a large male Rottweiler here since 1994. The house would seem very empty without one taking up that space.

Something to do with leftovers

June 15, 2009 by kathi

Something for people: Fried Rice

I am of Japanese ancestry, so there is always rice here. I used to make fried rice from leftovers quite often, especially during my younger and leaner years. The ingredients change depending upon what leftovers are available. The only constants are rice, egg, and soy sauce. The rice absolutely has to be leftover cold rice. If you are making a new pot of rice just for frying, sorry. You are not having fried rice until tomorrow! Freshly cooked rice is too moist and sticky to fry.

I had a taste for fried rice the other day. There were some shredded carrots left over from a pasta salad, some green onion stalks left over from Korean short ribs made earlier in the week, and some of those Korean short ribs. Perfect. The shredded carrots were a bit longer than I prefer, so I took a large handful and chopped them up a little more. I chopped up one green onion stalk, using both green and white portions. Then I chopped up the short rib meat. I didn’t use very much meat, maybe 1/4-1/3 cup. This all went into a frying pan to cook until the carrots and onions were soft and everything was hot. Short rib meat has enough grease, but if I’d used a leaner meat, I would have added a tiny bit of oil to the pan. Then the rice went in (I had about 2 cups) and everything stirred around until the rice was warm and the meat and vegetables were distributed evenly throughout. One raw beaten egg and some soy sauce to taste went in next, and stirred and tossed until the egg was cooked. If I had oyster sauce, I would have used some of that instead.

Yum 🙂

Something for dogs: Training Treats

The short ribs were a little too greasy to use for this, but any leaner leftover beef will work just fine. Cut it into small dice, spread them out on a paper plate, cover with waxed paper and microwave for 1-2 minutes, until they are somewhat dried out. Allow to cool completely before storing. They will last a few days in the refrigerator and a very long time in the freezer. I put just enough for a training class into each zip-lock baggie so I can just grab a baggie out of the freezer before heading to class. The treats thaw out on the way, and my dogs seem to consider them a high-value reward.

Rally obedience signs: the illustrated version!

June 14, 2009 by kathi

Wow, we are supposed to have two, count ’em, TWO days of consecutive sunshine! Rain is again in the forecast for the remainder of the week, but we are set to have sun tomorrow. Of course, I will become a believer only when I actually see and feel it.

While checking the searches that brought me visitors (and thank you for stopping by), I noticed several instances of people looking for rally obedience sign holders. One of my older rally obedience-related posts gives some good resources for signs and holders, but I thought that maybe some of you would like to see my homemade signs.

Signs can be downloaded in PDF format from the sites of the various organizations that sanction rally competition, and from a number of dog training sites and dog owners’ personal sites. I am lucky enough to have access to a color laser copier at work. I printed the signs on light card stock and put them in plastic sheet protectors. I think I would opt for heavier sheet protectors if I did it again. I bought the least expensive ones and they are a little too flexible. The clothespins are used to attach the signs to the wire holders.

EDITED TO ADD: I don’t usually number the signs for at-home practice. As small as the yard is, there is usually only one possible route anyway! If I do, though, I just write numbers on Post-it Notes. Hey, it works!

The wire holders are made from a folding wire garden edging fence, 18″ high with 8 segments, each approximately 1 foot wide. I didn’t save the packaging so I don’t have a brand name, but It was purchased at the local Ace Hardware store and made by Glamos Wire Products. The linked site appears to be for wholesale, but I would guess you could call to find the names of retailers. I’ve also seen them at Home Depot. Cost was about $5. I used a needle-nosed pliers to unhook the segments from each other and cut off the excess wire.

EDITED TO ADD: They also had taller (24″) folding fences made by Living Accents. They were $12.49 at my local Ace Hardware store. Here is a link to an online hardware store selling them for $6.99. Link no longer works, but you should be able to find these and other folding fences at your local Ace Hardware or Home Depot or [insert your hardware store or home improvement store here].

EDITED TO ADD: Check out this very cool variation from Marie at K-9 Solutions! She uses the same folding fences to create an indoor/outdoor version of the sign holders.

Here they are in the yard, set very close together just for photo purposes:

I also got the bright idea of using my Flip Mino to record our practice sessions. Since there isn’t always someone around to run the camcorder, I set it up on the patio table, on an inexpensive mini-tripod that was part of the accessory package that came with my digital still camera.

Our yard is small (the lot is a typical Chicago neighborhood lot, 30 feet wide by 125 feet long), but I wasn’t sure how much of the yard would actually be in the frame, so Axel and Freya helped me by heeling around the yard with me (separately, of course) so I’d have some reference points for setting up the rally signs and our other practice sessions for video. I left the camcorder running for about half an hour and now have a pretty good idea of which parts of the yard are out of the frame.

Here is about a minute and a half of Freya “helping” with the camcorder setup:

I plan to do more videos featuring the lovely Freya and the handsome Axel putting up with my sloppy leash handling and bad timing. Hopefully my handling will also get better as a result.

A little bit o’ ranting, a little bit o’ Rotts, a little bit o’ blog

June 13, 2009 by kathi

The Rottweilers are somewhat perkier than they were yesterday. I had Freya skip breakfast and her obedience class due to her digestive upset, but by afternoon she seemed to be feeling better. She was definitely eager to eat her dinner, bland though it was. Everyone’s ears look better and there’s no scratching and very little head flapping, so perhaps there is no infection, just dirt and waxy buildup.

Unfortunately, they had no outlet for the increased perkiness and energy and general evil, as it rained for most of the day. Again. Yes, AGAIN.

I’m only happy when it rains
I feel good when things are going wrong
I only listen to the sad, sad songs
I’m only happy when it rains

     —Garbage

Ummm. Sorry. Not in agreement. I’m all for a sad song now and again, but I am pretty damn tired of all the rain we’ve been getting, and the total lack of warm weather. I don’t like the super hot humid days that a Chicago summer can bring, but it would be nice to see a tiny bit of global warming in the area.

Since it was an indoor type of day until late afternoon, I took the opportunity to update my underused photo gallery from Gallery 1 to Gallery 2. I think I’m ready to work on organizing the many photos that now reside only on CDs, DVDs or my computer. I’m not quite so ready to work on scanning the many photos that have still never made the jump from old school prints to digital. That’s going to be a major task.

I really have to spend some time tonight and tomorrow and finally catch up on the rest of the magazine stuff, including an ad for Axel. In fact, I’m going to go and do that right now. See you tomorrow!
