The mums, a week later

October 14, 2010 by kathi

If I had my act together, I would have taken this photograph from the same vantage point with the same camera at the same time of day as the photo I took last week. Sorry, just not that organized!

To make up for my lack of organization, here is a closer view. So many more chrysanthemum flowers this week!

GNC Pets

October 13, 2010 by kathi

I buy my own vitamins and supplements at GNC, as well as a few for the dogs. And of course Rescue Remedy, and it is hard to say whether that is needed more by dog or handler.

Somehow, I missed the news of the GNC Pets brand until this morning. In the email newsletter with the usual specials was an introduction to their new pet-specific supplements. They are available online at GNC.com and some of the retail stores, as well as at PetSmart.

I haven’t had a chance to compare pricing and ingredients yet, but if they look good, I’ll give these products a try. If the products are comparable to what I’m using now, the convenience of getting all human and pet supplements at one place that often does free shipping specials would be nice. The offerings for joint support and digestive health are the ones I’m most interested in trying right away.

Tuesday TV break: Glee, Sons of Anarchy

October 12, 2010 by kathi

Continuing on as one of the very few members of the crossover audience for Glee and Sons of Anarchy, here is my previously-promised SoA rant followed by some thoughts on tonight’s episodes.

I’ll rant first so I can hide anything spoilerish under the “continued” jump.

I think it’s great that Sons of Anarchy has become popular with a diverse general audience and isn’t just a biker cult thing. Many of my co-workers and my husband’s co-workers watch the show, and only a few of them are bikers or motorcyclists (there is a difference). We look forward to discussing the show on Wednesdays (or Thursdays if someone is DVRing).

But I have a problem with one sector of the fan base: the posers. And to them, I say: it’s okay to not be a biker and still like SoA. It is not okay to pretend you are a real biker and try to live SoA. It’s offensive, though still mildly amusing, when you try to impress and it’s obvious your knowledge comes from your one neighbor who was in the local H.O.G. chapter for a year and actually rode a motorcycle on a long trip once, and from watching Gangland on The History Channel. It’s not amusing at all when you wear the ripoff merchandise that resembles a three-piece patch and act like you think you are in a real club or something.

I’m also not too thrilled with actual bikers who nitpick the show to death rather than enjoy it for what it is: a biker soap opera with one of the best casts and possibly the strongest writing on television right now. I know it’s easy to be critical when it’s a lifestyle, subject area, or location you are very familiar with. But too many of us have lost the ability to suspend disbelief and just enjoy.

Rant over… for now.

New Twitter, new task

October 11, 2010 by kathi

This is my Twitter background peacefully coexisting with the old Twitter web interface:

This is my Twitter background rudely obliterated by the new Twitter web interface:

In order for your custom Twitter background to be viewable by most browser/screen resolution combinations, you should plan on using a width of 41 to 108 pixels for the important stuff. The photo on my background is 200 pixels wide.

Not sure yet whether I’m going to just shrink down my existing photo and text, or do a complete redesign. I’ll have to do one for the Total Rottweiler Magazine Twitter page as well. Adding to the to-do list now!

Why I don’t play tug with my dogs, part 2

October 10, 2010 by kathi

A while ago, I talked about why I don’t usually use tugging as a training reward with my dogs.

I was just reminded of another reason today. If, because of your own general lack of athleticism and attentiveness, you move in the wrong direction after your rather large dog has targeted the tug and jumped to grab it, your dog might grab your bicep instead. He might realize the problem right away, and let go very quickly, but still…

…OUCH.

I would post a picture of the rather impressive bruises, but I wouldn’t want someone to use it against Rottweilers or dogs in general.

This warning probably does not apply to you. Only to me, because I am a klutz like that.
