Turn on the lights, brush away the cobwebs…

June 23, 2010 by kathi

Sorry I haven’t been around as much as I should be. I seem to have lost my way this month, with a NaBloPoMo fail and a definite shortfall of Mingling and Blog Hopping. I’ll play catch-up as best as I can, but I think I’ll forego any more attempts at NaBloPoMo until fall!

As you may already know, Freya’s training and trialing has not been a source of joy and wonder lately. A vet visit didn’t turn up any physical causes for our training and performance issues, but I didn’t have any lab work done at that time. I’ve been debating with myself about having a thyroid panel done. Her last one came back normal not quite two years ago. But she will be seven years old in November, so is now edging up to senior status (noooooooooo, she’s still my puppy girl), so at this point, maybe it is money well spent rather than a long shot. Hypothyroidism is also one of the only non-fatal things I can think of that could cause mood swings, hyper-reactivity, and weight gain (in her case a more subtle inability to get back to her ideal weight… hmmm… a problem for me, as well). Anything else I can think of is either much scarier, or else points back to me sucking big time as a dog trainer (this is actually the most likely possibility).

Speaking of health tests, I still need to get Axel in for his OFA cardiac clearance. I have been holding off in hopes of a cardiac clinic being offered at a nearby show, as the cost savings would be very significant (try at least 50%), especially if the clinic is also doing Dopplers. Since there have been no known heart issues with his parents or siblings, and I don’t have any immediate breeding plans for him, I guess it won’t hurt to hold off just a bit longer.

I know I’ve mentioned this before, but I’m going to mention it again anyway since it’s one of the things that has been eating up my time this month. Please think about subscribing to The Total Rottweiler Magazine. I am currently a volunteer (unpaid) proofreader and copyeditor for TTRM so I do admit some bias as I tell you it’s well worth checking into if you have any interest in Rottweilers and dog sports.

So that’s the short version of what’s been going on. I have a backlog of Freya training videos to analyze and comment on, as well as a couple of hopefully more informative short rally obedience-related videos that I’m editing in iMovie as time permits. I hope to also have some Axel frisbee video soon. On the technology side, I have some MacBook and Sony Reader thoughts to post. Oh, and I did manage to fit in the upgrade to WordPress 3.0 as well.

I know it isn’t supposed to be a main focus for this blog, but I still have some TV breaks that I never posted. Lucky for you all, some are no longer timely so you won’t have to read them, but at some point I still plan to tell you why Glee is the devil. I’m sure I’ll have at least a few new TV breaks once Rescue Me and Mad Men start up again on June 29 and July 25, respectively.

Hitting a rough stretch of road

June 1, 2010 by kathi

The last couple of months of our adventures in rally obedience have been like riding a motorcycle on a loose gravel road: rough, bumpy, and not very enjoyable. Although we did manage to get a few qualifying scores, Freya’s overall performance has been well below what she’s capable of. Obvious physical problems have been ruled out by her vet, and she usually enjoys her training classes.

Despite some good suggestions from trainers and friends, it still seems like we’re not making much progress. She doesn’t have specific exercises that she’s having trouble with; sometimes it’s an exercise she usually does well that has NQ’d us.

I’m debating whether to take a break and just let Freya be a plain old dog for a few weeks, or suck it up and work through it. I could really use one of those translator collars like in “Up” — it would make it a lot easier for Freya to tell me what’s really going on with her.

Saturday Pet Blogger Blog Hop

May 10, 2010 by kathi

No, it’s not Saturday. In fact, it’s Monday. Sorry about that! I’m just behind the curve as usual, and I was happy to see that the inaugural edition of the Saturday Pet Blogger Blog Hop is remaining open for a few days for us stragglers to join in!

Life With Dogs, Two Little Cavaliers, and Nip and Bones just started hosting this new Blog Hop on Saturday.

I’m looking forward to “meeting” more pet bloggers and pet blogs! This is not a 100% purely pet blog, but I hope that most of you enjoy visiting here anyway! You can use our “Topics” dropdown in the right sidebar to go straight to our pet-related posts under “Rottweilers” and “Non-Rottweiler Pets and Animals.”

Today, let me introduce you to one of the resident Rottweilers, Freya.

She is 6½ years old and came to us as a 7-week-old puppy. She was a gift from her breeders, sent to help us heal the broken hearts left by the unexpected passing of our first Rottweiler, Heidi, on Christmas Eve 2003. As you can see from our header, Freya has been honing her computer skills since the age of 9 weeks. Lately, she has been more involved in Rally Obedience competition than blogging (EDIT FROM FREYA: If I had my way, I’d be blogging and not following Mom around some stupid obstacle course!), but perhaps she’ll choose to be involved in some of the Saturday postings from here on out!

Weekend wrapup: things didn’t improve

May 4, 2010 by kathi

Our less-than-impressive trial weekend didn’t finish up any better than it began. Freya had two Level 1 runs and one Level 2 run, and managed to qualify in only one Level 1 run with another mediocre score of 185 points. Again, no ARCH points, but at least we are one small step closer to our RL1X, with 4 of 10 legs now complete.

It was disappointing to NQ on courses that should have been good for us, and frustrating because I’m not 100% sure why Freya was so out of tune with me. She seemed slightly depressed in the morning on both days, but she also seemed to adjust to the new surroundings more quickly than usual. She’s not particularly good with other dogs, but this weekend she didn’t go off on any other dogs, and she pretty much ignored dogs barking from vehicles and crates. That part I am definitely happy about, especially at a new venue with some areas that were very much close quarters. She was able to relax everywhere on the grounds—except in the ring where I needed her to be relaxed and attentive. I don’t feel like I ever had Freya’s full attention in the ring, even during our qualifying runs. So we definitely have things to work on before our next trial weekend, May 15-16.

Saturday Freya: not one of our better performances

May 1, 2010 by kathi

Today we went to an APDT rally obedience trial at Blitzen Canine Academy. This was not one of our better trial days. We were entered in both trials in Level 1 only, working on RL1X legs and ARCH points. We ended up with one NQ and one Q with a very mediocre score of 179. So we did not get any ARCH points but we did add an RL1X leg (now at 3 of 10).

Tomorrow, we are entered in both trials in Level 1 as well as Level 2 in the second trial. It will be a long day, so it’s way past time to get some sleep! I’ll talk more about the entire weekend tomorrow night.
