That one post every NaBloPoMo month (10 of 30/76 of 274)

April 10, 2009 by kathi

Sorry, all. Here is “that post” for April, sort of like “that post” for March: that one post in every NaBloPoMo month where I’m posting just to post because I’ve run out of time, or energy, or ideas.

Here’s a gratuitous Axel photo for your enjoyment:

Click for a larger version of Axel gaining 2 points at a show in Belleville, IL!

And if you would, please lend your support to the workers of AT&T:
http://standupforworkers.com/

They are currently working without a contract in five states and facing pay and benefit cuts despite the company’s profits and the fact that the executives, much like executives in the financial sector, are not taking any of the brunt of any planned reductions.

That’s all for now. See you tomorrow, when I get my energy and my content back!

Miscellaneous (27 of 31/62 of 274)

March 27, 2009 by kathi

It’s the end of a week in which I feel like I haven’t gotten much done. Some of these thoughts need expanding (and some of them will get their own posts in the future), and others are too long even in the short version. Anyway, here goes:

  • Note to self: In the future, don’t let too many versions of an operating system go by before doing an upgrade, budget or not. The Snap Server upgrade has turned into a really nasty project, and could have been prevented by spending around $500 two years ago. I can’t remember what we did spend that $500 on, either.
  • I wonder if an animal communicator would be able to get Axel to say why he hates one of our neighbors so much. Or would he just say the same thing one of my past bosses used to say: You can’t like everyone, there is a certain percent of people who are just idiots that you have to hate and you don’t have to have a real reason.
  • My old Dell Inspiron 1100 laptop, Freya-chewed corner and all, has moved on to a new owner. My “too old and too slow” is someone else’s “just enough to get by” and that isn’t all bad.
  • I really do wish there was such a thing as a pet fat transmogrifier. Axel could use the pounds that Freya needs to shed, and Annie could use Oliver’s extra pounds as well.
  • In the process of correcting someone for referring to Spam musubi as “Spam sushi” I found myself admitting to having a $200 rice cooker. Well, I do. And the Zojirushi Neuro Fuzzy rice cookers are just about worth it. The model I have even cooks brown rice properly. Not that I ever eat brown rice; being a third-generation Japanese-American I eat normal (to me) short-grain Calrose rice practically every day. The other issue I have about Spam musubi is that all of the Internet recipes claim that you “need” the musubi press to make them properly. What, these people are too good to use the Spam can or… OMG! their HANDS? Then again, a novice musubi maker is not going to compress the rice properly with only their hands, or worse yet, make round musubi, so maybe it’s better they buy those cute little presses. Round musubi are only for funerals, although I think that might be a regional thing so I might be in the minority at being horrified when anyone makes them for everyday food.
  • I have once again procrastinated on getting all of the tax stuff in to the accountant. I don’t know why I hate doing that task so badly. Perhaps I can get my husband to do it next year. Or more likely, not. We have opposing viewpoints on whether a large refund is good or bad. I absolutely hate to get a refund or pay additional taxes of more than a couple of hundred dollars. To me, that just means poor planning and in the case of a large refund, that someone other than us had the use of our money for the year. Not acceptable. Anyway. Everything will be ready to send in on Monday.
  • Once again, the Rottweiler wrecking crew has gone from insane perpetual motion to adorable sleepingĀ  angels. It’s like they run out of gas all of a sudden around 11 or 11:30pm and flop over to nap right in their tracks.
  • Speaking of flopping over and napping, what a great idea that is! Good night, all!

Observations (27 of 31/27 of 274)

January 27, 2009 by kathi

Ooh, look! We’re down to the last few days of NaBloPoMo for January 2009, and just about 10% of the 75% 2009 Challenge is done!

I thought our battle with technology was won in November, but sadly, I was wrong. A malfunctioning HDTV antenna caused us to spend a good part of the day troubleshooting and shopping for replacement pieces.

Fortunately, it was a grey and rainy day, so we didn’t miss much in the way of Valuable Vacation Time.

Depressing: Governor Blagojevich’s trial is news even here in Hawaii. When newsfolk here can properly pronounce his name, you know his scumbaggery is world class.

Emotional investment (18 of 31/18 of 274)

January 18, 2009 by kathi

EDIT: The post below was supposed to go live on Sunday night, 1/18/09. Through what was almost certainly human error, I just noticed it was still marked as a draft. I’ve edited it to show its intended posting date and time, and I’m explaining mostly because I’m doing NaBloPoMo this month, not because it’s interesting in any way! I did technically have another live post yesterday, so I’m still ok, aren’t I?

I remarked to someone today that I had no emotional or financial investment in the playoff games, so I could just sit back and relax and enjoy watching football just for the fun of it (because I am online too much, I also Twittered it). And I am.

It made me think for a bit, though. I really can’t think of many things that I do have an emotional investment in that are not highly personal. I’ve never been a huge fan of any particular celebrity or sports team. Like, enjoy, admire… yes. Worship, follow, adore… not so much. Not ever.

In some ways, I envy people that can get so totally involved in something that isn’t part of their small portion of the world. I watch super fans of whatever team is finally going to the playoffs of [name the sport] after 10, 20 or 100 (ok, maybe that one applies only to my city) years, and I can almost admire their blind faith and devotion.

But in most ways, I just don’t understand it. Anyone want to explain it to me?

Crossposted: Starring Max the Rottweiler…

January 13, 2009 by kathi

[Originally posted at Vox and LiveJournal]

While looking through my Recommended Books links on Amazon.com, I got a little bit sidetracked and found this:

Max Goes to the Moon: A Science Adventure with Max the Dog (Science Adventures with Max the Dog series)

Max Goes to the Moon: A Science Adventure with Max the Dog (Science Adventures with Max the Dog series)

How neat is that? The author has a website, Big Kid Science, and apparently there are a few other books in which Max continues his space travels.

On the Big Kid Science site, you can view pages from the book. Max's human companion is Tori, a young girl. For me, that makes it even better to have the central young character female and interested in science. Oh, and having a Rottweiler for a beloved pet!

The books have a lot of scientific facts and activities in addition to the fanciful story of Max's space travels.

I wish there were a few kids of the right age in my circles to gift with these books, but right now there aren't any. Perhaps I should buy them for myself! I also wish that one of my current dogs was more suited to therapy dog work. I miss being a therapy dog handler, and I'd love to be able to get involved in a program like Sit Stay Read! or any of the programs that use therapy dogs to promote literacy.

As seen from outer space

Speaking of dogs going to outer space, how about looking at an Earth dog from outer space? This is a portion of one of those satellite views that are a feature of all the popular mapping programs now. I am convinced that the dark blob at the edge of the walk is one of my dogs, probably Axel.

This concludes today's off-the-wall topic: Rottweilers, you and outer space!
