New Twitter, new task

October 11, 2010 by kathi

This is my Twitter background peacefully coexisting with the old Twitter web interface:

This is my Twitter background rudely obliterated by the new Twitter web interface:

In order for your custom Twitter background to be viewable by most browser/screen resolution combinations, you should plan on using a width of 41 to 108 pixels for the important stuff. The photo on my background is 200 pixels wide.

Not sure yet whether I’m going to just shrink down my existing photo and text, or do a complete redesign. I’ll have to do one for the Total Rottweiler Magazine Twitter page as well. Adding to the to-do list now!

Why I don’t play tug with my dogs, part 2

October 10, 2010 by kathi

A while ago, I talked about why I don’t usually use tugging as a training reward with my dogs.

I was just reminded of another reason today. If, because of your own general lack of athleticism and attentiveness, you move in the wrong direction after your rather large dog has targeted the tug and jumped to grab it, your dog might grab your bicep instead. He might realize the problem right away, and let go very quickly, but still…

…OUCH.

I would post a picture of the rather impressive bruises, but I wouldn’t want someone to use it against Rottweilers or dogs in general.

This warning probably does not apply to you. Only to me, because I am a klutz like that.

Saturday Pet Blogger Blog Hop, Week 23

October 9, 2010 by kathi

Freya pops in to visit the Blog Hop this week…

…just patrolling the fence line for something. We aren’t sure what that something is, as we can see nothing that should be of that much interest. Maybe she’ll do a post of her own and tell us!

Meanwhile, Life With Dogs, Two Little Cavaliers, and Confessions of the Plume have now brought us 23 weeks of the Pet Blogger Blog Hop. Almost six months of great pet blogs to read, and great pets and pet bloggers to meet! Thanks to all who make this so enjoyable.

The mums are back!

October 8, 2010 by kathi

When Dan first planted chrysanthemums, we didn’t realize they were perennials nor that their most beautiful blooms are in the fall, and were kind of puzzled as to why the plants we thought would be flowering all summer were just a big green mass o’ leaves until fall. Now we look forward to the flowers’ return every year in late September or early October. I’ll post another photo when the whole pot is fully in bloom.

I was taken by a photograph of you

October 7, 2010 by kathi

I hope you don’t mind if I talk a little more about Oscar during his birthday week.

During Oscar’s last winter here on this side, I was taking a couple of classes at DePaul University hoping to finish the degree I started a very, very long time ago. I didn’t accomplish that goal, but I did earn some credits from a wonderful class.

Since the class was centered around instant photography, I don’t think it’s offered any longer, at least not in the form I took it. You can still see the syllabus online.

At the time I did the second assignment for the class, I had no idea we’d be losing Oscar just a couple of months later. He was going through radiation treatment after surgery to remove his right eye along with the malignant tumor behind it, but he was handling it well at that time.

Oscar was the most willing subject in our household and was happy to go along with whatever I wanted him to do for my portraiture assignment. I decided to pose him in front of a variety of different open and closed doors, mostly at our house. To get the ten photos I submitted, I shot twice as many Polaroids. Shooting film, and especially instant film, makes you think about what you are doing.

Note: Some of the photos in the linked Flickr gallery are a little rough to look at, especially if you have or had a pet going through radiation treatment.

If you choose to click through and see Oscar and the doors, thank you. If not, I do understand. Either way, thanks for listening.
